I haven’t done much programming in D so far, but Visual D seems to provide to Visual Studio with most or all of the functionality that one would expect. Just be aware that you will have to retarget any projects that might contain C++ in addition to D code. ![]() This is an annoyance rather than a major problem. Rerunning the build does produce an error message stating that the Windows SDK version could not be found. The output window simply informs you that the project failed without giving any reason why. The following problem occurs the first time that you attempt to build the project: When creating a D/C++ Win32 Application, Visual D (version 0.48.1) sets the Windows SDK target to version 8.1.Some functionality, such as compile and run, or compile and debug, are available via the other Visual Studio dropdown menus as well. There are various search routines, help routines such as show scope, show parameter info, comment selected lines or uncomment selected lines, various compile options (run, debug, disassemble, etc.), visit Visual D website, and display and modify D language options. The Visual D dropdown menu provides access to functionality required for using D in Visual Studio. The project, and solution if necessary, are created.įor a console application, a single D file is created containing code that will print “Hello D World” to the console. When you select either of these project types and then click the OK button in the New Project dialog, the New Project dialog closes and the Visual D Project Wizard opens. This project type uses Visual D’s custom project type designed for the D programming language. This allows both D and C/C++ files to coexist in the same project. ![]() This creates a projet based on Visual C++ vcxproj files. Project templates are provided under File→New→Project…→Installed→Other Languages→D: What Does Visual D Provide? Project Templates The Visual D dropdown menu should now be visible. Once enabled, close the Extensions and Updates dialog and restart Visual Studio. Go to Tools→Extensions and Updates…→Installed→Tools→Visual D to enable it. If there is no Visual D dropdown menu showing when you start Visual Studio, then Visual D is disabled. Once Visual D is installed, it becomes available the next time you start Visual Studio. Visual D can be installed either during the installation of DMD (see D on Windows), or by itself from the release page for visuald on GitHub. The README file for the project page on GitHub states that it also supports GDC, but there does not appear to be a Windows package for GDC except on mingw. It supports both the DMD and LDC compilers. At this point, the Win32 Application Wizard will be launched. Visual D is a Visual Studio extension that provides project management, debugging, and language services for D. The first class languages include C++, Java, C, and Visual Basic (VB).
